California’s Building Standards Code (Building Code) are published in their entirety every three years. Intervening code adoption cycles produce supplement pages 18 months into each triennial period. Amendments to the Building Code are subject to a lengthy and transparent public participation process throughout each code adoption cycle. The current code cycle was adopted on July 1, 2019 and went into effect January 1, 2020.
In California all jurisdictional authorities that issue building permits, excluding charter cities, are required to enforce the California Building Standards Code. The current state codes are known as the Title 24: California Building Standards Codes, is comprised of the 2022 California Building Code, 2022 California Residential Building Code, 2022 California Electrical Code, 2022 California Plumbing Code, 2022 California Mechanical Code, 2022 California Energy Code, 2022 California Fire Code, 2022 California Existing Building Code, 2022 California Green Building Standards Code + Tier 1 standards.
