An “Accessory Dwelling Unit” (or ADU, sometimes called an in-law, secondary, or granny unit) is a second unit on a lot with a primary dwelling unit located on the property. An ADU can be an attached or detached residential dwelling unit and can also be created by converting existing garage space, living space, or accessory structures.
A “Junior Accessory Dwelling Unit” (or a JADU) is a small attached ADU, no larger than 500 square feet, that is contained entirely within a single-family residence or garage. JADUs are subject to fewer requirements and tend to be more cost-effective to build.
Below are some resources for homeowners looking to construct an ADU or JADU in Rohnert Park on the same lot as an existing home. If you are interested in constructing an ADU along with new construction or on multi-family parcels, please contact the City Planning Division to discuss. Owners may wish to share this website with professionals assisting them in the process, such as architects, designers, contractors, arborists, and engineers.
